More than one in five pregnancies ends in miscarriage, with the rate increasing as women age.

Scientists at Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine studied hormone levels in almost 2,000 patients who were pregnant following IVF.

They found that low levels of the hormone ?HCG were linked to a heightened risk of miscarriage.

When concentrations in the blood were below 30 units per litre there was only a 2 per cent chance the pregnancy would reach eight weeks.
